So in recent years, we are very much familiar with the word test-tube baby. But how is that even possible to have been occurred in Mahabharata?
With much more curiosity let us read further...
GANDHARI:
Gandhari is a noticeable character in the epic Mahabharata and was the princess of Gandhardesh. She is the greatest devote of God Shiva performed severe penance to please him as a result of which God Shiva blessed her with a boon to bear 100 babies. She was very much pleased with the boon.
GANDHARI'S PREGNANCY :
Gandhari was married to Dhritrashtra, the blind king of Hastinapura. Later she got pregnant but the weird thing that happened was her gestation period lasted for 2 years which is completely abnormal. And this made her so frustrated that she took a huge stone and hit her stomach vigorously as a result of which a flesh ball came out of her womb.
So what was that flesh ball? How will that develop into a baby? 100 babies in single pregnancy are that even possible? So let us see how modern science relates to these events.
GERM CELL:
A germ cell is a reproductive cell, this produces gametes. This germ cell plays a major role in determining the gender of humans. This germ cell is sperm in males and ovum in females. Millions and millions of sperms are formed in a male per day. That is about 1500 sperms are formed in a second. But a female ovum is formed only once in a month and one in number.
HYPEROVULATION :
But in some conditions, more than 1 ovum can be formed. This condition is called hyperovulation. Hyperovulation in humans refers to the production and release of more than one egg during a menstrual cycle. It occurs in 2 ways:
1. Natural hyperovulation
2. Artificial hyperovulation
NATURAL HYPEROVULATION:
Hyperovulation occurs naturally in some women it is not like a disorder or a disease but this natural hyperovulation is one of the reasons for the birth of twin babies. Some reasons for natural hyperovulation are:
• Heredity
• Health conditions
• Hormonal changes
• Age
ARTIFICIAL HYPEROVULATION:
It is a process in which hyperovulation is artificially induced for experiments, treatments, etc. It can be induced by using drugs, pills, and injections.
TEST TUBE BABY TECHNIQUE :
It is the process in which the ovum is fused with sperm for the fertilization process outside the body. It is commonly used in infertility treatments. In this method, the female is injected with injections or drugs to hyper ovulate. The ovum secreted in the female body is collected from the body and is fertilized with male sperm outside the body in laboratories which will further result in baby formation. Multiple ova are used in the test tube baby technique because the success rate of the test-tube baby is very low that only if we do 10 to 20 fusion that will result in the formation of at least 1 or 2 babies.
So now we are going to relate this hyperovulation concept with Gandhari.
GANDHARI'S HYPEROVULATION:
So in Mahabharata Gandhari was hyper ovulated by the effect of the boon which resulted in the formation of 100 ova to which 100 sperms have been fused and resulted in fertilization which further led to the formation of 100 babies. But these 100 babies have not been completely developed because no woman can bear 100 babies in their womb. So these 100 fertilized ova have grown to an extent that resulted in the formation of the embryo and was dormant in the embryo state. So when Gandhari got frustrated and hit her stomach it resulted in the outcome in the form of the ball of flesh from her womb. So the so-called ball of flesh was not flesh but a ball of the embryo.
So hyperovulation which is employed in the Test tube baby technique is the reason for the formation of 100 embryos in Gandhari's womb.
