The mesmerizing beauty of Tanjore Big temple makes both our mouth and mind wide open. Brihadeeswarar temple built by King Raja Raja Chola has astonished all of us British rulers of those days to researchers these days are puzzled by its architecture. Apart from all these wonders, the only question which arises after visiting the Great Brihadeeswarar temple is "Why did King Raja Raja Chola build this temple? "

Though there are so many existing answers to this question. An archeology crew puts an unexpected astonishing answer before all. They state that the Big temple was built to protect people from floods and other natural disasters. Yes, you heard it right.

Once in Chola kingdom a flood thrice powerful as the 2015 Chennai floods occurred and destroyed the entire dynasty.
The tremendous loss of life and wealth made the future of the kingdom at stake, devastating the king. The people who survived the floods were sheltered in the king's palace. The king contacted neighborhood kings to render a helping hand, but none came forward. Instead, the soldiers of the neighboring places stole the wealth of the people stuck in the flood and kidnapped young girls stuck in the flood. King was completely upset over the happenings.

Bringing the kingdom back to nature appeared impossible. Apart from this, The thoughts about protecting the kingdom the next time from such disasters haunted him. He arranged a meeting with his ministers to find a preventive solution for such problems in the future, but no ministers came up with a valid idea. Raja Raja Cholan being a great Shiva devotee covered all the walls of his palace with paintings depicting the events of Shiva Puranam.
During the discussion, the king viewed one such painting depicting an event, where God Shiva tests God Vishnu and Brahma. In this, Brahma turns into bird flies top to find the topmost end of Lord Shiva and Vishnu as kurma digs the ground to find the bottom-most end of Shiva but both failed. This painting depicting the endless nature of Shiva gave a well-grounded idea to the king. He decided to build tall temples in his kingdom denoting the endless nature of God Shiva.
During floods to prevent water from spoiling the foods and grains, he decided to store those grains on top of the temple kalasa, a dome that was depicted as Shiva's top. And to prevent the loss of wealth, he decided to store it as a treasure beneath Shivalinga, the garbhagriha which was depicted as Shiva's foot in the painting. He then told about building spacious halls for people to stay in temples safely during disasters. And he planned to bring in the practice of consecration of time to take out the treasure and grains stored in the temples to use it for the kingdom.
And drop excess wealth and foods in the respective places during temple consecration.
He also ordered his ministers to maintain accounts on the treasure present below the Shiva Linga in a copper plate and place the plate below Shiva Linga himself. More or less he planned the construction of Brihadeeswarar temple similar to a bank, placing God himself the security of his bank.
Therefore Archaeologists conclude by saying that, In the aspect of protecting his subjects and kingdom during disasters, King Raja Raja Chola built the great Brihadeeswarar temple. Some still believe in the presence of treasures beneath Shiva Linga of Brihadeeswarar temple. Many documentaries, films, and articles are being released, abiding by this fact.
